Private message to Author shortcode not working

So I have added the PM author shortcode to 2 content templates, but it is not showing up on the front end on either.
I have checked the Web console and there are no errors.
Here is the shortcode for reference.

[bp_better_messages_pm_button text="Private Message" subject="Have a question to you" message="Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry." target="_self" class="extra-class" fast_start="1"]

where did you put the shortcode? is it directly inside the php template? or wp editor?
